Rental Petiquette
Tuesday, September 7th, 2021

Finding an apartment or rental home that is pet friendly isn’t always easy. Many landlords don’t allow pets because they don’t want to deal with the expenses from damages or extra cleaning after the tenant and their pets move out. The landlords that do allow pets require a one time pet deposit, or a monthly pet fee for future expenses related to pets.
Pets play a big part in our lives and they always will. It’s important that you follow rental petiquette so that you’re on good terms with your neighbors and landlord. Here are some tips to help you keep the peace.
Clean Up After Your Pet
Whether you live in an apartment or rental house, one of the most important rules of petiquette you need to follow is cleaning up after your pet. You aren’t the only one who lives in your neighborhood, so it should be respected and kept clean. Always carry bags with you when walking your dog, so you can easily pick up and dispose of anything they leave behind.
Not only are you helping to keep your neighborhood clean, you’re helping to stop the spread of diseases. Dog waste has been known to carry viruses, bacteria, and parasites. You don’t want to be the reason someone else’s pet gets sick, so pick up after yours. With cats, make sure you clean out their litter box daily to prevent odors from getting out of hand.
Keep Your Pet On A Leash
Even if your dog is super friendly or trained to not run away when off its leash, you should still use one. Your neighbors might not be animal lovers or could be allergic. Being respectful of other people’s boundaries is an important part of petiquette.
Petiquette While You’re Away
If you work or go to school full time, you aren’t always home to spend time with your pets. Odds are, your dog is going to bark while you’re gone. Consider leaving your pets inside while you’re away so their barking isn’t as loud.
If you live in an apartment, consider having someone stop by to spend time with your pet or take them on a walk so your neighbors can have a break from the noise. If all else fails, consider signing your pet up for training or doggy day care.
