move-in checklist

Renting your first home is exciting, but can also be very stressful. Depending on how big your new home is, it can be easy to overpack. One important thing to do before you start is to ask your landlord what furniture comes with the rental home so you know what you need to purchase.

This move-in checklist will help you figure out everything you need so you can be prepared for your move!

After you get moved in, it will take time to get everything unpacked and put away. For the first night, you should have a few boxes packed with all of your necessities so they’re easy to find when you need them.

For your bedroom, you will need your mattress and bedframe, along with sheets, blankets, and pillows so you can still sleep comfortably during the moving and unpacking process. Clothes, shoes, and all of your electronics and chargers should be packed with necessities as well.

Kitchen necessities will include cups, plates, bowls, utensils, and a microwave so you are able to eat while in the middle of your move. Necessities from your bathroom will include your toothbrush and toothpaste, towels, toilet paper, shower curtain, and everything you use in the shower.

Packing By Room

Once you’ve packed all of your necessities, you can start packing everything else by room. Since it’s your first time renting, you will more than likely need to go out and buy everything for your home. When shopping, consider each room and what you want it to look like.

Living Room

The living room is one of the most important rooms in your rental home. It’s the first room you see when you walk in, and the room you will spend most of your time in, so you want it to feel comfortable and like home. Starting with furniture, you’re going to need a couch, coffee table, TV and TV stand, and any other seating you want. To make the space feel more comfortable, consider adding wall décor, curtains, and plants.

Depending on how much you plan on cooking, and how much storage you have, you’ll need to purchase and pack quite a bit for your kitchen. Most of the main items were packed with necessities, so everything else you’d need in a kitchen should be packed now.

Other things you’ll need in your kitchen include:

  • Pots and pans
  • Baking sheets
  • Tupperware
  • Toaster
  • Dish Soap and sponge
  • Paper towels
  • Knives
  • Can opener
  • Measuring cups
  • Trashcan and trash bags

For the most part, your bedroom should already be packed. Other things you’ll need for your room are nightstands, a dresser, a mirror, any decor, and everything else you’ve accumulated over the years that you are bringing with you to your new rental home.

There are a few things you will need in your rental home that aren’t specific to one room, like cleaning supplies, light bulbs, batteries, and a toolbox.

Before Moving In

Besides setting up your new rental home there are a few things you should do before the move. First, you should call and get your utilities set up. This needs to be done so you have water and electricity when you move in. Second, if you are going to hire movers to help, make sure to schedule in advance. Last, you need to get renters insurance. Most places require it, but it’s important to have it anyway, just in case something happens.

You can add anything to this move-in checklist to make it fit your style and personality. Get things that match your style and personality, and only bring the things you need so you don’t overpack for the space you have. Once you move in, you will have plenty of time to make the space yours.
