Childproofing your home is essential to keeping your child safe. There are many dangers that can be hidden in a rental home, and it is important to be aware of them. Even if you live in a rental home, there are still ways to childproof without the risk of losing your security deposit, and breaking the rules of your lease. Here are some tips on how you can achieve that.

Stairs And Doorways

If you have stairs in your rental home, childproofing them should be a top priority. To childproof stairs, you will need to install baby gates at the top and bottom. To install a baby gate at the top of the stairs,  you will need to drill holes into the wall to get it to stay in place. There are baby gates that don’t require you to drill into the wall, but the more sturdy the gate is, the safer it will be. Most rental agreements won’t allow you to drill holes. This is a conversation you need to have with your landlord. If possible, try finding a rental home without stairs so you won’t run into this problem.

Doorways are another area of the home that can be dangerous for children. To childproof doorways, you can install door knob covers. This will prevent your child from being able to open the door and wander off. To block off doorways without doors, you can install baby gates. The gates will fit into the doorframe, so you won’t need to drill any holes.

Windows

To childproof windows, keep them locked at all times. If your child is still able to unlock them, you will need to install window guards. Window guards will prevent your child from being able to open the window and fall out. If your windows come with blinds or shades, make sure the cord is tied up and out of the way of your child’s reach.

Cabinets And Drawers

All of the cabinets and drawers in your rental home need to be childproofed. This includes the ones in the kitchen, bathroom, and any other rooms that have them. To childproof cabinets and drawers, you will need to install locks. These locks will prevent your child from being able to open them and get into anything that is inside.

Appliances

Appliances are another area of the home that can be dangerous for children. To childproof appliances, keep them turned off and unplugged when they are not in use. Store all cords and plugs out of reach of your child. Keep any cleaning supplies and chemicals stored in a locked cabinet.

Outlets

To childproof outlets, you will need to install outlet covers. These covers will prevent your child from being able to insert anything into the outlet and getting electrocuted.
