Moving to a new rent house can be stressful, especially if you do not have a plan. Preparing beforehand can help you eliminate the stress and focus on the excitement of living a new home. Here are some helpful tips you can use to make your next move simpler.

Don’t procrastinate

It may be tempting to wait to pack and prepare to move to your new rent house because you are busy or just don’t like the process. But, this can cause you more stress when it comes time to move. Be sure to give yourself enough time to organize and pack before the move.

Create a plan and packing system

The best way to start the process of moving is to have a plan. You can create a checklist of items for each room in your home. Use numbers or color-coding to help you know what is in each box and go room by room. You can take this time to downsize the number of items you will take with you as well. Tip: Use an app on your smartphone to help you with your moving plan and list.

Use good quality moving supplies

Moving into a new rent house can present you with costs you may not have considered. For example, you may have to pay movers or you may want to spend some money on new furniture. But, you should allot some of your funds for supplies. You can get free boxes from some stores or from your friends, but if they aren’t in good shape, they could end up causing problems. Consider purchasing new boxes in varying sizes as well as tape, bubble wrap, foam, labels, and garbage bags.

Ask people you know for help

Moving into a new rent house alone can be overwhelming. If you have friends and family in the area, see if they can help you. It can be as simple as helping you prepare some boxes or moving small items of furniture. Make sure anyone who is helping you knows about your plan and your timeline. Offer them snacks and refreshments, as well as meals, to show your gratitude.

Pack a box or two of essentials

This is especially important to do if you are moving over the course of a few days. You will want to have some essential items available to you wherever you are staying. Make sure you have personal hygiene items like soap, shampoo, and a toothbrush. You should also have a couple of days worth of clean clothes, towels, toilet paper, and any pet items you will need. If you are planning on unpacking over a few days too, keep an extra box of overnight items like these for convenience.

Transfer your utilities before you move in

If you cover any utilities at your current rent house, be sure to switch them over before you are moved into your new home. This will help you be comfortable while you unpack and settle in. If you do not currently pay for utilities, you can set up accounts with the necessary companies.

Packing clothes

When it comes to packing up your clothes, it can be tempting to quickly fold them and put them in boxes. If you are rushing, you might even throw them in trash bags. For clothing items that belong on hangers, leave them on and use twist ties to attach the hangers together. Then, wrap them in plastic. This will protect your clothes during the move. Finally, unwrap the clothes, remove the twist ties, and hang the clothes in your new closet.

If you are folding clothes, be sure to fold them tightly, but do not overpack boxes. These can be labeled and unpacked easily. Another option is to leave clothes in drawers and wrap the drawers in plastic. Doing this means you won’t have to spend as much on boxes and other supplies.

Moving with your pets

If you have pets, your plans for moving into your new rent house should include them. Here are some tips to help make this easier.

  1. Pack an overnight box for your pets. This can include toys, food, water bowls, cat litter/boxes, and beds.
  2. If you are moving to a new city, get vet records for your animals and find a new vet as soon as possible.
  3. You could put your pets in boarding for a day two during the commotion of the move. If this isn’t an option for you, make sure to have a room or area of the house prepared for them beforehand. This area should be quiet. Make sure they have items to make them comfortable and stick to normal care routines as much as possible.
  4. Move your animals in your own vehicle. They are familiar with your scent and riding in a different vehicle can stress them out.
  5. If you aren’t sure how to move your pet, ask your vet for advice. This will be especially helpful if you have pets like fish, birds, guinea pigs, and other non-traditional animals.
